Rolls-Royce nuclear plant announced at the Advanced Manufacturing Park
Council chiefs have welcomed Lord Mandelson's announcement of a new Rolls-Royce civil nuclear plant in South Yorkshire.
Rotherham Council leader Roger Stone said: "In choosing the Advanced Manufacturing Park for its Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Rolls-Royce has chosen a location that is among the best in the world, with other world-leading companies already here.
"Rolls-Royce is already partnering Sheffield University's existing Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing, so this news, and the news that Rolls-Royce is to create a civil nuclear manufacturing facility in South Yorkshire, is further testimony to what the area offers.
"This is the future. It has massive implications for the UK economy. At a local level, as well as new high-quality jobs, we believe it will galvanise our young people into strengthening their skills and ambitions to be, like Rolls-Royce, world-class players."
John Mothersole, chief executive of Sheffield Council, described the announcement as "fantastic news" and added: "It will bring highly skilled, high added value jobs to the people of Sheffield and Rotherham. The sector has massive potential for growth and the Sheffield city region will reap the benefits of that.
Through its joint venture with major landowner UK Coal Plc, Strategic Sites provides existing buildings and a bespoke construction service at the AMP for companies in the Advanced Manufacturing Sector. Chief Executive Paul Barber said " This is a great endorsement of the quality of the Advanced Manufacturing Park - both in terms of the property and the support network - and will hopefully be followed by news that the Park will also be chosen by Rolls-Royce for its major manufacturing facility."
